As official documents establishing rights and duties of different parties, contracts must be thoroughly translated in such a way as to make the described determinations clear, eliminating any ambiguous, irregular or insufficient interpretations, protecting them from errors that may be used against either party.

The Superior Court of Justice of Brazil, for example, has ruled that the translation of the contract for discovery in legal action must be complete.
